Caltagirone: the show of the Scala illuminata

In the picture you can see a really spectacular place: we are talking about the Staircase of Santa Maria del Monte, in Caltagirone. Place that, on July 24^th and 25^th, 2019, will become even more special. In fact, on these days, the 2019 edition of the Scala illuminata (literally, “illuminated staircase”) will take place.

A unique setting

Return to the stairway. Now imagine it in the evening, illuminated by the traditional “tiles” that draw breathtaking scenery. This is an inevitable tradition that takes place on 24 and 25 July each year on the occasion of the celebrations in honor of St. James. And the illuminated stairway will be a part of the festivities. In fact, in the two days there will be many moments between the sacred and the profane, between processions and folklore. In short, a truly unmissable event to immerse yourself in the most suggestive part of Sicily.

An idea for an excursion

The illuminated stairway could be a wonderful idea for a sort of unscheduled excursion during a tour of eastern Sicily. It will be, in a sense, the icing on the cake of this journey.

Getting to Caltagirone

You can easily get to Caltagirone starting from Catania, one of the main ports where ferries arrive and depart for Sicily. Just take the state road 417 and follow the signs for Caltagirone. The journey by car, which you can take on the ferry, will take you just over an hour.
