The course of the Cassibile river, over the centuries, has shaped its gorges. Today, Cavagrande is one of the most precious naturalistic, archaeological and anthropological treasures of Sicily. During a vacation, an excursion will allow you to immerse yourself in a unique, wild, magical place.
The Riserva naturale orientata Cavagrande del Cassibile (that’s the name in Italian) is included in the municipalities of Avola, Noto and Syracuse, in the province of Syracuse, eastern Sicily. From Catania or from Syracuse, take the A18 motorway and follow the road signs to Avola and to the nature reserve.
The journey by car from Catania takes about one hour and twenty minutes; the journey by car from Syracuse takes about fifty minutes. There are two parking areas.
The real heart of this memorable excursion is the long Cavagrande del Cassibile canyon. On the north side there is a small group of cave dwellings. On the south side you can find the dwellings carved into the rock. On the northeast side, there are several ancient necropolises.
And don’t forget, in the valley, one of the most beautiful places of the reserve: the small waterfalls and lakes.
