The beaches are one of the ways to discover the sea of this island with its wild and jagged coast where numerous small nature masterpieces are set. Like these eight caves, by far the most beautiful to see on Marettimo.
It is the most famous one among the caves on the island, and all boat tours stop here. In the Grotta del Cammello, a sort of natural skylight illuminates an intense blue sea.
Inside, shards, remains of oil lamps, and dishes were found. For the presence of a natural fresh water pool, the cave has been inhabited for long periods.
The name comes from some stalactites and stalagmites whose shape reminds the figures of the traditional Nativity scene (presepe means “crib”).
Ruttiddi means “small caves”. Some of the most beautiful parts are the forty-meter-long tunnel and the famous grotta degli Innamorati.
Also in this case, the name derives from the particular shape of a large rock (located near the entrance) that resembles a bull head (toro means “bull”).
According to many, among the several caves of Marettimo, here you can admire the best sea. The name grotta del Tuono (“thunder”) comes from the sound of the sea smashing on the steep cliffs.
A quite small but wonderful cave.
Perciata means “pierced”: the cave, in fact, looks like a huge hole in the coast overlooking the sea. The turquoise sea is unforgettable.
To visit the caves of Marettimo, you just have to take part in one of the several boat tours departing from Marettimo and Levanzo.
