Beautiful beaches, ancient cities, unforgettable panoramas: this is what you expect when spending a holiday in eastern Sicily. Take your hiking boots with you. Because there are five unforgettable excursions.
- Etna. The highest active volcano in Europe is a must-do excursion of any holiday in eastern Sicily. The places to see are the craters, the so-called Montagnola, the Valle del Bove (a large valley), the caves, the Monti Silvestri.
- Gole dell’Alcantara. It’s a long canyon, formed by ancient lava rocks cooling, and crossed by the homonymous river. This excursion is recommended especially for experienced hikers. The Gole dell’Alcantara are easy to reach from Messina.
- Taormina. The pearl of the Mediterranean Sea is located between Messina and Catania. It’s possible to visit Taormina in one day and see: the Greek theatre, the beach of Isola Bella, Piazza IX Aprile, the cathedral, Corso Umberto, the public gardens.
- Cavagrande del Cassibile. In the province of Syracuse, the true heart of this reserve is the long canyon. Among cave dwellings, ancient necropolis, waterfalls and ponds, you will discover a real natural, archaeological and anthropological treasure.
- Parco dei Nebrodi. It’s easy to reach by car from Messina. Among the most beautiful places to see in Nebrodi park there are rocche del Crasto, cascata del Catafurco (a waterfall), bosco della Tassita (a wood) and lago Biviere (a lake).
