The highest active volcano in Europe. Always associated with the fire of its eruptions, is also one of the ski spot in Sicily during the winter. And you’ve in mind to get to the top of Mount Etna in the most adventurous and definitely nice way: hiking.
Here’s how to get there.
The first stage of the hiking tour to Mount Etna is the Rifugio Sapienza. If you move by car, from the ring road of Catania you have to follow the signs for Etna. Once crossed the towns of Gravina and Mascalucia you get to Nicolosi. From Nicolosi, follow the signs for Rifugio Sapienza, on the southern slope of the volcano.
Two hiking routes start from there to get to the Etna crater on foot.
Hiking route #1
The itinerary is Montagnola-Torre del Filosofo-Crateri Silvestri (400 meters of height difference uphill and 900 downhill). It starts from Rifugio Sapienza. The trail is moderately difficult but it is always better to be prepared and trained, and especially should keep in mind the rules dictated by prudence. So you can admire some of the most beautiful things to see on Etna.
Hiking route #2
Of the two, this is the most challenging hiking route, recommended only if you are an expert or if you go with a prepared and qualified guide (1000 meters of ascent and 900 of descent). Departure is from the so-called Schiena dell’Asino and the other stages are, as for the hiking route #1, Montagnola, Torre dei Filosofi, Crateri Silvestri.
Obviously the ways to get to the Etna top are many, some of which are very comfortable, as the cable car starting from Rifugio Sapienza. But probably you have in mind to get there by hiking, so you can fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the volcano. So you just have to organize your trip to Sicily.
