Monte di Pietà or Seralcadio: 5 places to see in this historic district of Palermo

Its foundation dates back to the Arab rule in Sicily. In fact, the origin of its name is Sari al Cadì. Also known as Il Capo, Monte di Pietà or Seralcadio is one of the historic districts of Palermo. And here you have the five most beautiful things to see in this enchanting place.

  1. Cattedrale di Palermo. Dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the cathedral is one of the must-see places of any holiday in Palermo: the main place of worship of the Sicilian capital is an imposing structure that mixes very different architectural styles (Romanesque, Norman, Gothic, Baroque, neoclassical).
  2. Il Capo. Seralcadio is also known by the name of this historic market, among the most colourful and lively in the city. Indeed, it is almost folkloristic: among the stalls that sell food products, it is a continuous series of sellers’ voices extolling the quality and freshness their products. It’s worth a visit (also) to taste the typical Sicilian street food.
  3. Museo diocesano. It is located within the Palazzo Arcivescovile. Divided into thirteen rooms, each dedicated to a specific type of work of art, the museum is like a priceless casket containing relics of the Norman and Swabian, Byzantine and medieval period, and again statues, sculptures, paintings.
  4. Teatro massimo Vittorio Emanuele. Welcome to the one that may be considered the largest lyric theatre in Italy. The real theater is surrounded, literally, by a complex of rooms, halls, galleries and monumental stairs.
  5. Porta Carini. One of the old city gates, rebuilt in 1782. Located near Teatro Massimo, Porta Carini is typically neoclassical and was made of white limestone.

This is the itinerary to visit (even one day should be enough) the Seralcadio district. And, since you are planning to spend a holiday in this beautiful island: have you booked the ferry trip to Sicily?
