You’re about to enjoy a tour of eastern Sicily. Obviously, you want to visit the city of the Strait. And you’re wondering what to see in Messina in one day.
Such as visiting Palermo in one day, twenty-four hours are not enough to see the many beauties that Messina has to offer its visitors. And we can give some great tips to make the most of the available time.
The starting point to visit Messina in one day. The first thing to see is the early-twentieth-century fountain that stands in the center of the square. Nearby there are via Primo Settembre and piazza Cavallotti.
This is the most important street in the city of Messina, with many shops, restaurants, boutiques, and ice-cream shops. In one of the many bars, you can taste excellent ice creams and the famous Sicilian granita.
If Viale San Martino is the most important street, Cairoli is the main square of Messina, one of the most popular places in the city. At the centre of the square, you can see the fountain’s spurts. In the kiosks of this square, you can taste the typical salty lemonade.
Go back towards viale San Martino and turn right to via Santa Cecilia: here you can admire the apartment where Giovanni Pascoli stayed, and where the poet composed L’aquilone (“The kite”).
The church is located in via Cesare Battisti. This is a wonderful testimony of Byzantine art in Italy.
The complete name of this church is santuario della Madonna del Carmelo. Destroyed during the earthquake of 1908 and subsequently rebuilt, the church, which stands on the ancient Via Porta Imperiale, has typically neoclassical architectural elements.
The real heart of Messina, with the Gothic, Baroque and Neo-Gothic basilica dedicated to the Madonna Assunta. And while you’re in this square, you could take a look at the treasure of the Duomo.
The astronomical clock is part of the cathedral’s bell tower. It is divided into two parts: the first, facing the square, is full of allegorical representations; the part facing the cathedral is the real astronomical clock.
The last thing to see in Messina in one day is located in piazza Duomo: we’re talking about the so-called fountain of Orion, which represents the four rivers of Messina.
After the must-see places, you could take the opportunity to visit the surroundings of Messina. In particular, we recommend three other great one-day itineraries:
Talking about what to see in Taormina in one day, here there are the unmissable places: the Greek theatre; the Isola Bella beach; Piazza IX Aprile; the Duomo; Corso Umberto; the public gardens.
By car, it takes about one hour to get to Taormina from Messina.
The itinerary of what to see in Catania in one day is a seven-stage tour: Duomo square; old town centre; Ursino castle; Bellini garden; via Etnea; San Benedetto church; underground city. You’ll discover the several souls of a city that’s rich in history and culture.
By car, it takes about one hour and twenty minutes to get to Catania from Messina.
In the surroundings of Messina, a visit to Milazzo is a must-do: the places to see are the ancient village, the castle, the new Cathedral, the ancient Cathedral, Amico palace and the Statue of Liberty. Don’t forget wonderful beaches such as Ponente beach, Croce di mare and Paradiso bay.
By car, it takes about forty minutes to get to Milazzo from Messina.
After so much walking, you will be tired and certainly hungry. In the old town centre, you will find many restaurants that will welcome you. And there are so many things to eat in Messina. Such as:
