Palio di San Martino: 2 days of celebration in Castell’Umberto

A good chance for an off-season weekend in Sicily? The Palio of St. Martino in Castell’Umberto will bring you to know the tastes and traditions of this beautiful corner of Sicily, the Nebrodi Mountains. The event will be on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th of November. Let’s find out more about this event.
This year will be the tenth edition of the Palio di San Martino at Castell’Umberto: an event that every year summons a lot of people, especially for the exciting Barrel Race. The most anticipated event of the Palio di San Martino is a competition in which the teams are challenged to roll a barrels into a curvy path in the shortest time. The Barrel Race will be on Sunday, November 12th, at 3.30 pm.
Along with the Barrel Race, the celebration dedicated to San Martino is also an occasion to taste the typical products of the territory. Indeed, the Palio di San Martino in Castell’Umberto is also known as the feast of mushrooms, sausage, chestnuts and wine, with a tastings of local dishes such as macaroni with pork sauce and hazelnut noodles .
What to see in Castell’Umberto
The Palio di San Martino even offers an opportunity to know better this little village in the surroundings of Messina. Castell’Umberto’s center, with its ancient sandstone houses, offers spectacular views such as those of the Byzantine castle ruins, the churches of Santa Barbara and San Vincenzo, and “u chianu a vucciria“, the main center of social life in town. You can also visit the park of the Nebrodi Mountains.
How to get there
Castell’Umberto is about 100 kilometers from Messina, the nearest port that you can reach from all over Italy by booking a ferry to Sicily. From here, you can choose different paths:
- taking the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway to the Rocca di Caprileone exit;
- through the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, until Brolo exit;
- with the State Highway 116 Randazzo-Capo d’Orlando.
