Five places where you can taste the real Sicilian pizza: from Palermo to Ragusa

We’ve already said what to eat in Sicily, which are the dishes to taste and where you can taste them. Still missing a piece. A very important piece of Sicilian cuisine. This is the Sicilian pizza.

To be precise, we will talk about Sicilian pizzas, plural. Here’s the reason. And here’s where to find these specialties.

1. Palermo

Here you will taste the one that can be considered the Sicilian pizza par excellence: the sfincione. Prepared with tomato, onion, anchovies and cheese, it’s sold by fry shops and peddlers in the streets of Palermo.

2. Catania

  • The scacciata is a very ancient tradition in the province of Catania: a calzone stuffed with various ingredients (cheese, anchovies, broccoli, cauliflower, potatoes, spiced meat).
  • The crispeddi are large sandwiches stuffed with anchovies and fennel.
  • The pizza of Zafferana Etnea and Viagrande is a fried calzone with cheese, anchovies and mushrooms.

3. Messina

U pituni missinisi: that’s the name of a calzone stuffed with endive, cheese, tomato and anchovies. Same ingredients to prepare the focaccia alla messinese.

4. Syracuse

The pizzolo is a pizza stuffed with various ingredients, both savory (meat, vegetables, cheese and/or salami) and sweet (pistachio, chocolate, ricotta and honey) ingredients. It is a typical specialty of Solarino and Sortino, in the province of Syracuse.

5. Ragusa

The scaccia is similar to the scacciata of Catania. It can be stuffed with various ingredients (ricotta and onion, cheese and sausage, tomato and onion, tomato and eggplant).
