Sicily: by ferry or by plane? The first solution is the most indicated

When you choose a destination, one of the first things you need to decide is how to get there. Usually, always consider more options, so you can find the one that best meets your needs. And for this trip to Sicily, between the ferry and the plane, the best solution is definitely the ferry. Here is why.

How to get to Sicily

  • By boat. This is the most practical way to get to Sicily. All you have to do is book a place on one of the many ferries that depart every day from the main Italian ports and that will take you directly to the most important cities of Sicily, such as Palermo and Messina.
  • By car. By car, you have to take the A2 motorway, also called the Mediterranean motorway, which connects Salerno to Reggio Calabria. Just before arriving in Reggio Calabria, exit at Villa San Giovanni and board the car on one of the ferries that arrive to Messina.
  • By train. There are several trains that connect Sicily (and in particular Messina, Syracuse and Catania) with the cities of the hinterland.
  • By plane. Palermo, Trapani, Catania and Ragusa are the main airports of Sicily.

Why choosing the ferry

Compared to the plane, the ferry has a great advantage: the chance to board a car, which will allow you to move freely and visit all the most beautiful places of this beautiful island (and the same is true even if you do the comparison with the train). Moreover, taking the ferry is also preferable compared to the journey made entirely by car: in fact, the journey times are practically the same; taking the ferry, you can embark the car and make the whole trip in complete relaxation, especially if you have booked a cabin.
