Discovering San Vito Lo Capo: the Tonnara del Secco

The legend tells the Tuna of San Vito Lo Capo has very ancient origins, dating back to IV or V century before the Christ. The tunas near Trapani are ones of the most popular in the Mediterranean Sea. Big tunas were fished at the end of their life. The fishing was maked by tonnarotti, this is the name of fishermen in Sicily, and it was very rich. All the work started in April, when the tonnarotti cast the nets into the sea, a few steps from the shore. These created a sort of rooms that, making smaller, allowed the rich fishing of tunas.

It deals with of a millennial tradition but it doesn’t take place since 1969, unfortunately, becouse of the massive presence of the industrial fishing. This place is certainly rich of charm and then it deserves a visit. A Sicily full of story will give its welcome to you with its nice smile.
