Tindari: the most beautiful places to see in 1 day

Tindari is a small town, a treasure trove of artistic, historical and natural treasures. If the time at your disposal to visit it is only a day, you will need to make a selection: this is our proposal to embark to of Tindari knowing already what to see with certainty.

Tindari 5 things to see

Tindari is a small fraction of the municipality of Patti, in the province of Messina, few live there during the year, but many tourists crowd the town, especially in spring and summer or coinciding with the famous Festival of the two seas, cultural event that since 1956 is housed in the splendid Greek theater. In a day we recommend to see:

  • Sanctuary of Tindari. Located at the top of a promontory overlooking the sea, where once the acropolis of the city founded by Dionysius of Syracuse in 396 BC stood. The symbol of the sanctuary is the statue of the Madonna nera, built entirely with cedar wood and a typical example of African and Oriental art. The Madonna of the Sanctuary is depicted as “Queen Enthroned” and holds Christ in her arms.
  • Archeological area. This is the site that contains the remains of the ancient city built in sandstone. Here you can admire mosaics, sculptures, objects and ceramics. Most of the finds are kept in the local museum, but there is also a selection at the museum in Palermo.
  • Greek theatre. Inside the archaeological area there is also the most symbolic monument of the city, the beautiful Greek theater of Tindari. The structure dates back to the 4th century BC, shortly after the foundation of the city itself, it was built by the Greeks, but later the Romans changed the architecture and transformed it into an amphitheater for the games of the gladiators.
  • Old Town. Take some time to stroll around the old town center: visit the basilica, the Roman block bordered by the decumani and some secondary roads, the tabernae and the old shops, and finally the domus of the first century BC. equipped with mosaic baths.
  • Marinello beach. To take a break and enjoy the particular landscape at the foot of Tindari, visit this particular beach that stretches right on the slopes of the promontory on which Tindari stands.
