What to see in Syracuse in one day: the itinerary

Your next trip will be along the eastern Sicily and you have also organized the tour. Of course, it must be Syracuse, one of the most beautiful cities that this beautiful island can offer. For the stage, you only plan for 24 hours. Few, but they will be enough: here is what to see in Syracuse in one day.

Morning

Ortigia is a small island just off the coast, connected to the mainland by three bridges. With the distinctive white color of its buildings and the beautiful sea that licked it, this place could be considered as an authentic open-air museum.

You will spend the first part of the day here, from morning until lunchtime. In particular, the places you will see are:

  • The Aretusa source, a water mirror surrounded by papyrus.
  • The Duomo (which combines baroque and rococò style), the church of Santa Lucia alla Badia (baroque style) and the hypogeum, underground path that reaches the walls of the Marina: all are in Piazza Duomo.
  • The Temple of Apollo, in Pancali Square, whose remains stand out in a green garden.
  • Maniace Castle, one of the most important and evocative of Sicily.

Lunch

So much walking will surely make you a bit hungry. Fortunately, in Ortigia there are certainly the cozy and typical restaurants where you can taste the specialties of the city: for example, you can mention spaghetti to the siracusana, fish soup, tuna to the delicious, savory, the inexhaustible orange juice and almond paste.

Afternoon

From Ortigia you will move to the archaeological park of Neapolis. It’s a natural area that preserves invaluable archaeological finds dating back to different periods of Syracuse history. Here, the places to be missed are:

  • The tomb of Archimede;
  • The Greek Theater;
  • The Ninfeo cave;
  • The latomies (remains of caves of stones or marble);
  • The Aqueduct Galeries;
  • The so-called Dionysius ear (an artificial grotto whose echo can amplify sounds up to 16 times).

And with Dionysius’s ear end this itinerary to visit Syracuse in one day.
